The Best Autumn Events in Sainte-Maxime

8 October 2014

Discover the Most Exciting Events in this Charming French Riviera Town

The Cote d'Azur may already have its fair share of tourist hotspots, such as Monaco and Cannes, but one town that is adored by both tourists and locals alike, but that occasionally slips under the radar, is the picturesque Sainte-Maxime. Just across the bay from Saint-Tropez, Sainte-Maxime plays host to a number of exciting and popular events, which attract a healthy mix of residents and visitors. As we head in to October, the cultural calendar shows no sign of slowing down. So, to help you decide when to make your visit to the town, here's our picks of the best events taking place this autumn.

Henri Matisse Exhibit (Until the 19th October)

One of France's most celebrated artists, Matisse's inventive work spanned over seven decades, and he left a number of world-famous pieces as his lasting legacy. Along with the likes of Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, Matisse is credited as one of the revolutionaries in the field of modern art. To celebrate his life and work, an exhibitdisplaying a number of his pieces is currently on show at the Town Hall Annex.

Free Flight World Masters (11th and 12th October)

Now in its fourth year, the Free Flight World Masters will take place in the skies above Sainte-Maxime, with the downtown beach being the place to get the best view. Throughout the course of the two days, you'll be treated to world-class displays of individual and synchronised air acrobatics. The highlight will undoubtedly be the 'battles', where two planes go head-to-head to perform the most jaw-dropping stunts and manoeuvres.

The Sainte-Maxime (26th October)

Whether you're in the mood to get out and run or simply want to cheer on those taking part, the annual 'Sainte-Maxime', a day of running and hiking events, is an excellent way to enjoy a late October day in the French Riviera. The main event of the day is an 11.5km trail run, which takes in many of the sights and sounds of this picturesque part of France.

Rallye du Var (26th - 28th November)

Like the Free Flight World Masters event, this rally is one of those rare days when Sainte-Maxime is transformed from a picturesque seaside town to a hub of noise and excitement. The Rallye du Var is the closing stage of the France Rally Championship, making it one of the most important days in the rally racing calendar. Weaving its way around the French Riviera, the route takes the competitors through the heart of Sainte-Maxime before heading back in to the rolling hills that surround the town.

With such a varying calendar of events, it's plain to see why Sainte-Maxime is such an integral part of the French Riviera. It has its own unique charm and personality, but still has excellent transport links to the other glamorous destinations up and down the French coastline. The Hotel Amarante Golf Plaza is the perfect place to stay in Sainte-Maxime and enjoy all the excellent autumnal events.
