Exposition du Dimanche des Peintres
2nd July 2017
Formerly a favourite of Fauvist, Charles Camoin; Sainte-Maxime has long been the apple of many an artist’s eye – and Exposition du Dimanche des Peintres provides the perfect opportunity to see displays of paintings and sculptures by local professional and amateur artists.
For the occasion, Promenade Aymeric Simon Lorière will transform into an alfresco art gallery – where a stroll along the walkway will acquaint you with alluring landscapes, abstract interpretations and surreal sculptures. Furthermore, all works on display will be open to your judgement! So vote for your favourite(s) and return in the evening for the Awards Ceremony to see who will take the artistic accolades.
Running alongside the main displays, there will also be a workshop teaching the Japanese techniques of Manga (Japanese illustration) – courtesy of the European Academy of Manga; perfect for children, oriental enthusiasts and all-round art lovers.
Bastille Day
14th July 2017
Vive le France! Every 14th July, France celebrates its National Day – Bastille Day (or the more poetic Le Quatorze Juillet); marking much cause for celebration as the whole country revels in bank-holiday fuelled merriment.
Sainte-Maxime is no different; where the jovial atmosphere is added to by an exciting evening of entertainment – commencing with a tremendous firework display overlooking the Gulf of Sainte-Maxime. The colourful ceremony typically begins at 10.30pm, although arriving early will guarantee you the choicest seats to see the sparkling spectacle – where both sky and the reflective sea are set ablaze by the vivid display.
And the night is still young! After the fireworks, follow the crowds to the Théâtre de la Mer; where you can dance long into the night courtesy of the energetic Aud & Show Orchestra and Allemagna – suppliers of an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary beats.
Rosé Day of Provence
19th July 2017
Not that you needed an excuse (but just in case you do) – Sainte-Maxime’s Rosé Day of Provence will allow you to sample the world-famous produce of the Vineyards in the Var.
Provence is undoubtedly the premier producer of rosé wine; with their trademark zing, bountiful bouquets of berries and light but not absent body – all of which can be experienced for yourself when Var farmers from across the Cote d’Azur congregate at the Promenade Aymeric Simon Lorière.
In addition to the tasting, you will also be able to mingle with growers, fellow enthusiasts and thirsty tourists as you all share in a passion of viticulture – which will make its home in Sainte-Maxime between 5pm and 7pm.
Opera under the Stars at Place Pasteur
10th August – 11th August 2017
As darkness descends over Sainte-Maxime, the sounds of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers will illuminate Place Pasteur with enchanting evenings of opera under the stars.
Romeo and Juliet is among Shakespeare’s most treasured works (and probably his most famous) – inspiring the creation of countless reinterpretations. Two such derivatives are the opera adaptations by Gounod and Bellini – whose music provides the basis for Shakespeare in Love.
The musically founded Shakespeare in Love is the brainchild of soprano Pauline Courtin, tenor Antonel Boldan and baritone Seung-Gi Jung – who will harmonize their vocal range to deliver the dynamic duets and soulful solos from the two celebrated composers. Franck Pantin on piano completes the ensemble – entrusted to supply the sounds that will aid in evoking the passionate highs and tragic lows of the world’s most famous lovers.
Place Pasteur’s Opera under the Stars has become a firm favourite among locals and tourists alike, so advanced booking from the Cultural Affairs Department is advised. Tickets cost €15 with Free Entry for under 16s.
