Blasco Mentor Exhibition

Musée de la Tour Carrée

Until 21st August 2016

Art fans should head to Sainte-Maxime’s Musée de la Tour Carrée for an exhibition of works by Catalan painter Blasco Mentor this August. The 38 paintings currently on show highlight the diversity of the award-winning artist, whose colour palette has been described as being reminiscent of ‘…Spanish fiestas’. The free-entry exhibition explores a variety of his subject matters, including the female form in 1959’s oil painting ‘Nu au canapé’, which depicts a nude figure wearing a red hat while leaning back on yellow seating. Other themes featured include historical scenes, fantasy and daily life, including 1979’s ‘Autoportrait’, which shows the artist’s vision of himself in monochrome, offset by pinks, greens and yellows.

Born in 1919 in Barcelona, Mentor studied at the city’s Fine Arts Academy and fled to France following time in the Republican Army. He settled in Solliès-Toucas, an hour from Sainte-Maxime, but also worked in Paris and exhibited internationally. During his career, he won many awards including a ‘Silver Medal of Fine Arts’ that had also been awarded to Picasso and was named a ‘Chevalier des Arts et Lettres’. Alongside oil paintings, he worked in a range of mediums and formats including sculpture, graphic arts, mural and fresco design. This will be the second time Mentor’s work has been exhibited at la Tour Carrée and the current display features works that haven’t been seen before… making it truly unmissable for any art lover visiting Sainte-Maxime this summer.
