International Women’s Day Celebrations

4 March 2015

Show Love and Appreciation in Sainte-Maxime this March

On the 8th of March every year, International Women's Day sees an outpouring of admiration, respect and sense of unity felt from Singapore to Sweden, Nepal to Nigeria. Around the world, countries come together to celebrate the love and achievements of women with a variety of celebrations, from family gatherings to empowering conferences. Discover the history behind Women's Day and the many ways you can show appreciation for the leading ladies in your life this month, whether its joining in the many international events or treating someone special to a relaxing weekend break.

Women's Day Around the World

The roots of International Women's Day began at the first National Woman's Day in the United States in 1909, with the idea of International Women's Day being put forward at the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen during 1910. Today, politics, equality and empowerment remain at the forefront of International Women's Day in some countries, with events concentrating on educating and encouragement. This year, many cities will be hosting conferences, networking opportunities and workshops, while the arts will also play a significant role in highlighting the role of women in many regions.

A 5km walk will be taking place in Trinidad to draw attention to issues faced by women, while mums and daughters will be learning to code in Luxembourg. A special blog is being created in India to share inspiring stories about women and, as part of Women's History Month in the United States, California will be showcasing films by and about women at Lunafest. The enjoyment of reading will be promoted in Iraq with a presentation of 500 books, while emerging female artists in Dubai will be exhibiting work around this year's theme of 'Make It Happen'. From an FA Girls' Football Festival in England to a youth writing contest in Cambodia, there are so many inspiring events happening around the world this month.

In some countries the focus has shifted entirely from politics to simply an expression of love for women. Italians mark the occasion by offering bouquets of yellow mimosa flowers, while in Russia, it's an official public holiday that sees families coming together for a celebratory meal and to shower women with presents, flowers and poetry. Employers and office workers are known to offer their female co-workers small gifts whereas in countries including Bulgaria, it is celebrated more in line with Mother's Day, showing there are so many different ways to offer thanks on March the 8th.
